I’m narrowing down my first live account and one thing I keep hearing is that spreads explode during NFP and CPI. I don’t want my first fills to be random because the spread went from 0.2 to 4 pips in a second.
For anyone who trades news or just holds through it, which brokers have given you the most consistent spreads on majors during those events? If you have screenshots, short videos, or logs from MT4 or MT5, even better. I also try to factor the real cost after commission and any cashback or rebates, so I’m curious if that actually changed your choice.
Please include account type, entity, region, and instrument if you can. What brokers for beginners have handled NFP and CPI spreads well enough that you would open your first live account there?
IC Markets held better during CPI in my tests.
Pepperstone widened fast but filled orders cleanly.
Run a controlled test across two or three brokers. Use small live accounts on EURUSD and XAUUSD. Record spread and execution around NFP and CPI. Sample every second from five minutes before to five minutes after. Note average spread, highest spread, and slippage on a 0.1 lot order. Then calculate cost per lot as spread plus commission minus rebate. Example. 1.5 pips spread plus 7 dollars commission minus 2 dollars rebate equals about 1.0 pip total. Repeat across two events to avoid one off results.
Ask for full proof when people share results. A short video of the Market Watch spread and the Journal time stamps helps. Include server name, account type, and region. Some brokers show tight spreads but slip during the spike. Others widen more but fill cleaner. Also check if stop levels expand during news. That changes your entry plan. Post your raw numbers in a table so others can compare.
Start small with one micro lot during news.
If the spread jumps past your limit, just skip the fill and wait for the first minute candle to settle.
My spread on EURUSD hit 3 to 4 pips on NFP. Rebate trimmed a bit but slippage was the bigger cost for me.
Demo spreads looked fine. Live account told a different story during CPI. Test with tiny size before trusting the numbers.
For beginners, pick a broker that lets you control max spread. Use a stop limit or a custom script to block fills beyond a set spread.
