What's the most illiquid instrument you've ever tried to trade?

I’ve been trading for a while now and recently had a frustrating experience trying to trade what turned out to be an extremely illiquid pair. The spreads were huge, slippage was terrible, and I could barely get my orders filled at decent prices.

It got me curious about other traders’ experiences with illiquid instruments. What’s the most illiquid thing you’ve ever attempted to trade? Could be exotic currency pairs, obscure commodities, penny stocks, or anything really.

I’m interested to hear your stories - how did you realize it was too illiquid? Did you get burned by it or manage to get out okay? And more importantly, what warning signs should newer traders watch out for to avoid these liquidity traps?

Looking back, I probably should have done more research before jumping in, but live and learn I guess.

Penny stocks were a nightmare for me. Avoid them.

That sounds rough. I once tried trading a little-known commodity. The spread was crazy and I had trouble executing my orders.

Turkish Lira pairs during their crash were a nightmare. USD/TRY moved 5-10% daily but spreads hit 50-100 pips. Orders wouldn’t fill or you’d get slammed with slippage. Even nailing the direction didn’t matter - entry and exit costs destroyed any profits. Red flag: when your broker pushes spreads past 10 pips on any pair. They can’t hedge properly and you’re basically trading a broken market.
