What's the best time of day to trade Gold? I've heard the New York session is when it really moves.

Hey everyone,

I’m still pretty new to trading and I’ve been looking into gold (XAU/USD). I keep reading that timing is really important with gold trading, and someone mentioned that the New York session is when you see the biggest moves.

Is this actually true? What makes the NY session special for gold compared to London or Asian sessions?

Also, are there specific hours during the day when gold tends to be more volatile? I’m trying to figure out when I should be watching the charts more closely versus when I can probably step away.

Any insights from experienced gold traders would be really helpful. Thanks!

Been trading gold for 5 years - London session is where the real action starts. Around 3 AM EST, institutional money starts flowing and things get moving.

London-NY overlap is the sweet spot, but don’t sleep on pure London hours. Gold moves hard when geopolitical stuff hits overnight.

Here’s what most traders miss: gold gaps like crazy on Sunday opens. Always check what Asia did over the weekend - those gaps set Monday’s tone.

Avoid 12-2 PM EST. Volume dies and you’ll get chopped up in sideways action. Asia can surprise you though, especially with China or Japan news.

During NY session, watch DXY like a hawk. When dollar strength shifts, gold follows within minutes.

Gold is active during the London and New York overlap, especially around 8 to 11 AM EST.

NY session is key - that’s when US economic data hits and big institutions jump in. Gold gets volatile with US inflation data, Fed talks, and dollar moves. 8:30 AM EST is your money time for data releases. Biggest spikes happen then. London-NY overlap (8-11 AM EST) has solid volume, but don’t sleep on London open at 3 AM EST. Skip Asian hours unless there’s breaking news. Spreads get ugly and price action turns messy.

Skip lunch hours completely. Trade morning gaps instead.
