What does the phrase "The trend is your friend" actually mean in practice?

Been hearing this everywhere but struggling to understand how it actually applies when I’m looking at charts.

Does it just mean go with whatever direction the market is moving? How do you even identify what the real trend is versus just noise?

Moving averages clarify trends. If the price is above the MA, it’s an uptrend. If below, it’s a downtrend.

Look at the daily chart for the trend.

Trade with the market, not against it.

If price keeps making higher highs and lows on bigger timeframes, that’s an uptrend - look for buys.

Downtrends work the opposite way. Wait for pullbacks, then jump in following the main direction instead of trying to catch tops and bottoms.
