what does it mean when a stock is oversold and should you buy?

Been seeing RSI levels hitting oversold territory on some positions lately but not sure if that’s actually a buy signal or just noise.

What’s your experience with oversold conditions? Do you actually jump in when indicators show oversold or wait for other confirmation?

Strong downtrends ignore RSI. Stocks can stay below 20 for weeks. Oversold signals are reliable when prices bounce between support and resistance. In strong momentum, indicators break down. Check the daily chart first. If you see lower highs and lower lows, the RSI is not helpful. Wait for a clear structure break before considering a long position. Market conditions matter. In bear markets, oversold readings often fail.

Oversold readings aren’t great standalone signals - they work better when you look at the whole picture.

I check if the stock’s hitting major support or if there’s actual bad news driving the drop. Sometimes fundamentals keep pushing prices down no matter what RSI says.

Patience is everything. Wait for the selling to dry up before you jump in.

Oversold just means heavy selling - doesn’t guarantee a bounce. Price can keep falling if there are good reasons for it.

Oversold stocks can easily drop another 50%

Oversold means price dropped quickly due to heavy selling but it does not mean it will recover. RSI below 30 indicates oversold but stocks can stay there for a long time. Do not buy based just on RSI. Look for support levels, volume spikes, or news that might reverse the trend. Price can continue to drop even more after being termed oversold. Wait for clear signs of reversal before buying, like a hammer candle or breaking resistance levels. Trying to catch falling prices often leads to losses.

RSI oversold conditions wrecked me when I started trading. I’d see that line drop below 30 and think it was easy money.

Wrong. Oversold can get way more oversold. Now I combine it with price action instead of trading it alone.

I wait for RSI to climb back above 30 while price makes a higher low. That tells me selling pressure might actually be done.

Timeframe matters too. Oversold on 4H charts means more than 15-minute charts. Longer timeframes are way more reliable for reversals.

Volume’s critical. No volume spike during the bounce? It’ll probably fade fast.
