Been trading with 1:100 leverage for months but keep seeing people mention going higher like 1:500 or even 1:1000.
Obviously bigger potential gains but the risk side has me thinking twice. What’s your experience been with different leverage levels?

Using high leverage can allow for larger positions with less capital. I found that 1:500 can provide an advantage, but it also tends to encourage overtrading. That’s why I prefer 1:200. It still offers good opportunities while helping avoid bad trading habits.
Higher leverage doesn’t enhance your profit potential. It just increases your risk. You can lose your account quickly at 1:50 or 1:1000 if your trade risk is too high. The challenge is psychological. With higher leverage, margin requirements decrease, making high risks feel acceptable, but you should only risk 1-2% per trade. Stick with lower leverage until you’re consistently profitable. This approach helps you develop better position sizing habits. Once you master risk management, leverage becomes less important since you will size positions based on what you can afford to lose.
Tried 1:500 with FXTM a few years back thinking I’d make bank faster. Blew through two accounts in six weeks.
Leverage itself isn’t the problem - it’s the head games. You see those tiny margin requirements and suddenly risking 5% per trade feels normal. Next thing you know, you’re gambling.
I stick to 1:200 max now and only risk 1-2% per position. Higher leverage just gives me flexibility for smaller accounts or when I want to spread across more pairs.
Honest take? Your 1:100 is plenty until you can profit consistently for 6 months straight. Leverage won’t make you better but it’ll definitely make mistakes cost more.
I stick with 1:100 mostly. Higher leverage tempts you into bigger positions than you should take. This video covers the risks pretty well.
Start conservative and work your way up once you’ve got solid risk management down.
High leverage amplifies losses quickly and harshly.
