I get that there are London, New York, and Tokyo, but which of these tends to be the most volatile? Any insights on their typical movements?
Every session’s got its own vibe. Tokyo (11 PM - 8 AM GMT) is where JPY pairs shine, especially when Asian data drops. Watch out though - liquidity’s thin so you’ll see plenty of fake breakouts. London kicks off at 8 AM GMT with massive volume. That’s when EUR and GBP finally wake up, and moves are much cleaner thanks to all that liquidity. New York opens at 1 PM GMT and USD pairs start cooking, especially on data releases. If you want pure volatility, London’s your best bet. Those first two hours after open usually set the day’s range. But here’s the kicker - that London/NY overlap from 1-4 PM GMT consistently moves the most pips across all major pairs.
London’s your best bet for consistent volatility - it overlaps with Asia’s late session and then New York kicks in. The sweet spot is usually 2-3 hours after London opens when the market finally picks its direction. Tokyo can surprise you during major economic releases, but it’s mostly calm except for JPY crosses.
Tokyo’s 11 PM to 8 AM GMT - quietest session. Works for ranging but don’t expect big moves without major news.

New York opens 1 PM GMT. Real action’s during the London/NY overlap 1-4 PM GMT - peak volatility. EUR/USD moved 150 pips in 3 hours last week during that window.
London’s most consistently volatile. NY can explode but it’s unpredictable. Tokyo’s reliable but slow.
