Been trading gold for a while now and trying to figure out the main price drivers.
Is it USD strength, inflation data, or central bank policies that move it the most? Sometimes feels like none of my analysis matters when it just does whatever it wants.
From my trading experience, employment data moves gold harder than most people realize. Non-farm payrolls can swing gold 20-30 dollars in minutes because it affects Fed rate expectations.
I track the DXY correlation but found it breaks down during certain periods. Gold rallied while the dollar strengthened multiple times in 2022 when recession fears peaked.
The thing that catches me off guard most is jewelry demand from India and China. During their wedding seasons or festivals, physical demand can push prices up even when technical analysis suggests it should drop.
For day trading, I focus on the 10-year yield more than anything else. That relationship stays pretty consistent compared to other indicators.
USD correlation is strong but gets overrated sometimes. Fed policy changes tend to move gold more than daily dollar moves.
Dollar strength usually has the biggest impact since gold is priced in USD. When the dollar weakens, gold often rallies and vice versa.
Real interest rates matter too because gold doesn’t pay yield. If rates go negative or very low, gold becomes more attractive.
Geopolitical events can cause sudden spikes but those moves don’t always stick around long term.
Focus on news events for price moves.
Central bank buying drives major trends. When banks like China’s or Russia’s central bank load up on gold, it creates sustained upward pressure that lasts months or years. Inflation expectations matter more than actual inflation numbers. Gold moves before CPI data confirms what traders already suspect. Real yields are the technical driver to watch. When 10-year TIPS yields drop below 0.5%, gold usually performs well. Above 1.5% and it struggles. The unpredictable moves you mention often happen during options expiry or when large funds rebalance. Those are just noise.
