I’ve been looking at opening a Swissquote account and noticed they offer both MT4 and MT5. I know there are technical differences, but I’m more interested in what actually happens when I’m trading during volatile markets or major news events.
MT5 sounds newer and more advanced, but I’ve also heard that some brokers have issues with it when volume spikes. MT4 is older but apparently more stable in chaotic conditions. I don’t want to pick based on feature lists - I want to know what actually works when it matters.
Has anyone tested both platforms on Swissquote specifically during times when spreads blow out and the market is moving fast? Did you notice execution differences, order rejection issues, or platform freezes? Which one actually held up better for you?
Also, does the platform choice affect your rebates or trading costs in any way?
MT5 faster. MT4 older but stable. Choose based on your style.
Both platforms handle volatility fine on Swissquote honestly.
MT5 has better order processing during volatile conditions, but the difference on Swissquote is minimal. What actually matters more is the broker’s server infrastructure and order queue handling. During major news releases, execution speed matters more than platform choice.
If you scalp or day trade, MT5 gives you slightly better fill speeds on Swissquote. If you hold positions for hours or days, platform choice barely matters. Test both with real money during a calm market first - don’t judge stability during chaos using a demo account.
Neither platform choice affects your rebates. That’s determined by your account type and trading volume, not the terminal you use. Focus instead on which platform’s charting tools and order types match your trading strategy. Some traders find MT4’s simplicity better for focus, especially during volatile moments when fewer options means fewer mistakes.
I use MT5 on Swissquote and it’s been solid through some crazy volatile days. The platform doesn’t freeze or slow down on me, which is what I was most worried about.
That said, I didn’t test MT4 extensively on the same account, so I can’t give you a direct comparison from my experience. What I’ve read from other traders here is that both work fine - it’s more about which interface you’re comfortable with.
The rebate thing doesn’t change with platform choice, so that’s not a factor in your decision. I’d just suggest trying both on a demo account during a volatile market and see which one feels more natural to you. That’s usually the best indicator.
MT5 is newer. MT4 is simpler. Both work fine on Swissquote.
During volatile markets neither platform has major issues from what I see people saying.
One thing people overlook is EA compatibility. If you’re thinking of using automated strategies, MT4 has way more support. MT5 is catching up but the MT4 ecosystem is still larger.
For manual trading though, both handle Swissquote’s conditions well. I’d say test MT5 first since it’s the newer standard. If you find it annoying or you’re planning to use EAs, switch to MT4. Swissquote lets you use both, so there’s no penalty for trying.
