I'm trying to learn candlestick patterns. Which ones are the most reliable and easiest to spot for a beginner?

Been studying charts for weeks now and getting overwhelmed by all the different patterns out there.

Some look obvious in hindsight but impossible to catch in real time. Others seem to show up everywhere but don’t actually mean much.

What patterns actually work consistently enough to be worth focusing on first?

Start with pin bars and engulfing patterns. These two gave me the best results when I was learning.

Pin bars are dead simple - long tail, small body. I hunt for them at major support/resistance levels. They work great on 4H and daily timeframes.

Engulfing patterns are easy to catch too. When one candle completely eats the previous one, pay attention. Just make sure volume confirms it.

Ignore the fancy stuff like three black crows or morning stars right now. I wasted months on those - they’re too subjective. You’ll start seeing patterns everywhere that don’t exist.

Master these two first. Get good at spotting them in different markets, then expand. Better to nail a few patterns than suck at dozens.

Shooting stars crush most fancy patterns. Long upper shadow, tiny body near the low - can’t get simpler. I short these at resistance levels all the time. Any timeframe works, but dailies cut through the noise. Stop overthinking it. Most patterns fail because people force them where they don’t belong. Wait for obvious setups at clear levels. Price action beats perfect candle shapes every time. Start with one pair. EUR/USD gives clean signals without the exotic currency headaches.

Inside bars are straightforward - no need to hunt for reversals. They pop up when the market takes a breather after a big move, and the next candle sits completely inside the previous one’s range. Super easy to spot and gives you clean entry points above or below. I mostly use them for continuation setups instead of trying to catch tops and bottoms like other candlestick patterns.

Support and resistance breaks work better than candlestick patterns.

Forget complicated patterns. I wasted my first year chasing every formation and lost money consistently.

Dark cloud cover saved me. Two candles - bullish one first, then the second opens higher but closes below the first candle’s midpoint. Super easy to spot.

I only trade these at daily resistance on major pairs. GBPUSD and AUDUSD give the cleanest signals. Wait for completion, then short with stops above the high.

This setup’s worked through three market cycles for me. The trick is patience - maybe 2-3 solid ones monthly per pair. Quality beats quantity.

Most traders jump in when they see candles that sorta look right. Only take textbook setups. Your win rate will skyrocket.

Hammers and dojis work great too. Just watch for them at key levels - they’re solid reversal signals.
