Hey everyone,
I’ve been working on developing my swing trading approach and I’m getting comfortable with holding positions for several days to weeks. The major pairs like EUR/USD and GBP/USD are obvious choices, but I’m curious about branching out a bit.
I’m specifically looking for currency pairs that:
- Move at a steady, predictable pace (not too volatile)
- Have clear trends that develop over time
- Are liquid enough that I won’t run into spread issues
- Work well with swing trading timeframes
I’ve heard some people mention certain cross pairs or even some of the more stable exotic pairs, but I’m not sure which ones would be good for this type of strategy. I want to avoid anything too choppy or unpredictable since I’m still building confidence with my system.
What pairs have you found work well for swing trading? Any specific characteristics I should look for when evaluating new pairs to add to my watchlist?
Thanks for any suggestions!
NZD/CAD’s great for swing trades. Both central banks are slow movers, so you get clean trends that last weeks without all the USD noise. EUR/GBP’s another winner - moves in long cycles and actually respects support/resistance unlike most crosses. Range is predictable and breakouts follow through. Skip JPY pairs unless you know their intervention game. CHF can work but watch how it correlates with risk-on/risk-off moves. Always test on daily charts first. You want clean trend channels, not pairs that whipsaw around moving averages.
CAD/CHF is perfect for swing trading - moves slow and steady since both central banks rarely touch rates. Trends stick around forever. Boring, but that’s exactly what you want.
GBP/NZD’s another option if you don’t mind the wider spreads.
EUR/NZD’s great for swing trading. The trends build up gradually which gives you time to work with.
AUD/CAD’s been my go-to for swing trades the last couple years. Both economies move at similar speeds so you don’t get those wild spikes like USD pairs throw at you.
Trends typically run 2-3 weeks - plenty of time to ride them. It respects technical levels really well too.
EUR/CHF’s worth watching. Super smooth moves and the SNB keeps things stable. Just don’t trade it around their policy meetings.
One thing I learned the hard way - check swap rates first. Cross pairs can kill your profits on week-long holds. My broker gives decent swaps on AUD crosses which helps.
Stick to pairs where both currencies have similar volatility. Mix a volatile currency with a stable one and you get choppy price action that’s impossible to read.
