I'm completely new to Forex. What's the absolute first thing I should learn?

Just opened my first trading account yesterday and honestly feeling overwhelmed by all the information out there.

Should I focus on technical analysis first or understand fundamentals? Everyone seems to have different opinions on where beginners should actually start.

Risk management first. Period.

Too many new traders dive into charts and indicators, then nuke their accounts within weeks. Learn position sizing and stop losses. Never risk more than 1-2% per trade.

Demo account first - treat it like your real cash. Keep a journal from day one. Write down your entry reason, exit plan, and what actually happened.

Once you stop losing money consistently for a few months, then learn technical analysis. Pick one simple strategy and stick with it. I burned my first year hopping between systems.

Fundamentals can wait. Don’t go broke first.

Focus on understanding price action before delving into tools. Many beginners get distracted by fancy indicators and miss the essentials like support and resistance levels. Start with daily charts on major pairs and practice identifying key levels. Once you grasp this, you can expand your knowledge.

Start with economic calendars and news flow. Most traders skip this, but it’s saved me from getting destroyed more times than I can count.

You might nail the perfect technical setup, but when NFP or central bank news drops mid-trade, your stop loss won’t save you. Found this out the hard way when an ECB surprise moved EUR/USD 200 pips in minutes.

Use ForexFactory’s calendar. Red events move markets fast. High impact USD news hits almost every major pair.

Then pick one major pair like EUR/USD and watch it for weeks. See how it acts around news versus quiet times. Better than any indicator when you’re learning.

Avoid trading the first 30 minutes after big news until you get how crazy volatile it gets.

Start with forex pair basics before jumping into analysis. Most beginners skip this step and pay for it later. Get comfortable with pip values, lot sizes, and margin requirements first. You need to know exactly what you’ll make or lose per pip move. Next, practice with naked charts - no indicators. Stick to EUR/USD daily charts and watch how price moves for a few weeks. You’ll see it bounce off round numbers and previous highs/lows. Skip the fancy tools until you can spot potential reversals on your own.

Start with currency pair basics. Figure out what EUR/USD actually means before you even look at charts or strategies.
