How to track oanda's real-time spreads during major news events effectively?

I’ve noticed Oanda’s spreads can spike unpredictably during high-impact news. What tools or methods do you use to monitor live spreads and avoid entering trades when spreads widen? Does anyone have advice on setting alerts or optimizing entries around volatility while factoring in rebates?

Check spread charts. Exit positions before news.

Use a volatility filter.

During NFP or FOMC events, I set price alerts 5 minutes before the release. If spreads exceed 3 pips on EUR/USD, I wait. Track rebate eligibility—some brokers exclude news volatility periods. Backtest historical spreads for patterns. Use limit orders to avoid slippage.

I use a third-party spread tracker that alerts me when spreads double. Helps avoid bad entries. Also, rebates still apply if the broker doesn’t mark the trade as ‘high volatility.’ Just make sure to check the terms. Demo test this during low-risk times first.

Most platforms show live spreads. Refresh often during news.

Built a custom spreadsheet pulling Oanda’s API data pre-news. Noticed spreads spike for 2-3 minutes post-announcement. Now I pause trading for 5 minutes and use trailing stops. Rebates cover about 20% of the extra cost if I must trade. Not ideal but manageable.
