How do you learn to control fear and greed in your trading?

Been trading for a while now but still struggle with this.

When I’m up I want to hold longer for more profit. When I’m down I panic and close too early.

What actually worked for you guys to get better at this? Looking for practical stuff that made a real difference.

Strict rules keep emotions in check. My three non-negotiables are: take profit at 2:1 risk-reward, cut losses at my stop, and never move stops against me. When fear or greed kicks in, I just follow the rules without thinking. After about 200 trades, closing winners early or letting losers run feels wrong.

Stop losses help but the real trick is trading smaller until it feels boring.

Paper trading can be a great tool. Spending time with fake money showed me how emotions can affect trading.

It’s easier to observe fear and greed when there’s no real cash on the line. Once I transitioned to live trading, I was more aware of my reactions.

Make sure to treat paper trades seriously by using proper position sizes and adhering to your strategy.

Position sizing was a game changer. Dropping from 3-5% risk down to 1% per trade killed the fear almost instantly.

Before, I’d stress over every pip when I had too much skin in the game. Now I stick to my plan since one bad trade can’t wreck me.

Trading journal made a huge difference too. I write down my entry reason and exit plan before hitting buy/sell. When emotions hit, I just check what I wrote when I was thinking straight.

Took around 6 months of keeping positions small before losing trades stopped feeling like gut punches.

Set clear targets and automate your trades.
