Most platforms show real-time PnL but it lags when volatility spikes. I check multiple timeframes to get the full picture.

Figure out your position size before volatile sessions hit and calculate risk per pip by hand. Jot down your entry price and risk amount on paper or in a simple notepad. When markets go crazy, platform P&L becomes a mess. Spreads widen and quotes lag. I just ignore those running numbers and stick to my exit levels I set beforehand. Only check your actual P&L at key support and resistance levels where you were planning to review trades anyway. Staring at those bouncing unrealized numbers during volatility leads to stupid decisions.
Third-party portfolio trackers are better when volatility spikes. TradingView stays responsive while my broker’s PnL often freezes.
MT4’s tracker craps out when spreads blow up during news. Found out the hard way on NFP days.
Now I just use Excel with my broker’s API feed. Updates every few seconds and does the P&L math based on my entries. Way better than trusting the platform when things go crazy.
I also size down on volatile days. Easier to track and I don’t get mini heart attacks watching those red numbers bounce around.
Volatile days screw up refresh rates on most platforms. I set alerts at my exit levels instead of staring at bouncing P&L numbers.
Investing.com alerts beat broker notifications every time. When price hits my level, I check the exact P&L then.
I screenshot positions before major news events. Platforms show crazy numbers during chaos and you need proof of your actual entry.
Map out your exit strategy before volatility hits. When EUR moves 100 pips in 10 minutes, you can’t calculate P&L in your head while watching red numbers.
Your broker’s mobile app usually shows more stable PnL than desktop platforms when things get crazy.
I track my positions in a phone note - entry prices and where I want to exit. When spreads go nuts, I watch price levels instead of dollar amounts.
The PnL math doesn’t change, but the display gets all wonky when everything’s moving fast.
Just check your account balance every few hours instead.
