Been trading crypto for a while but never really paid attention to this.
Does the crypto market actually close during major holidays like Christmas or New Year? I know forex has some downtime but crypto seems different since it’s decentralized.

Never closes but liquidity gets weird on holidays.
Markets never close, but big institutional players usually check out during holidays. Makes things choppy.
Bitcoin and major alts typically go flat over Christmas week, then pick up once everyone’s back in January.
Timing matters if you’re planning bigger trades around holidays.
Trading continues during holidays, but fake breakouts are common. When volume comes back, price moves reverse quickly.
Markets stay open, but don’t expect your broker to process deposits or withdrawals during major holidays. Bank transfers around Christmas? Plan on 2-3 day delays. Price gaps are the real problem. Low volume means one big order can spike prices 5-10% out of nowhere. Great if you’re scalping, but your automated systems better have solid risk management or you’re screwed. Check when your exchange’s support is actually working. Got a trading issue on New Year’s Day? You’re waiting until Monday.
Crypto markets never close. I’ve been trading for years - you can buy and sell Bitcoin at 3 AM on Christmas morning, no problem.
Volume tanks during major holidays though. Bitcoin moves slower and spreads widen when everyone’s celebrating instead of trading.
Some exchanges do maintenance during quiet holiday periods, but we’re talking a few hours max. Way better than forex where you’re locked out for days.
Watch out for thin liquidity during holidays - your big orders might push prices around more than normal.
