does technical analysis work for long-term traders?

Been swing trading for a while using mostly fundamentals but keep seeing people talk about TA for longer timeframes.

Wondering if support/resistance levels and trend lines actually hold up when you’re holding positions for weeks or months instead of scalping.

Monthly levels work but fundamentals still drive the big moves.

Daily charts work well for swing positions. I just use basic trend lines and they hold up better than you’d think.

Technical analysis can benefit longer-term trading, but your strategy must shift. Focus on daily and weekly charts instead of intraday fluctuations. Significant support and resistance levels on monthly charts remain relevant over extended periods. For example, EUR/USD often reacts to the same levels for months. Avoid getting misled by smaller timeframe movements; a breakout on a 4-hour chart is insignificant if you’re near a weekly resistance level. Prioritize higher timeframe trends and align them with your fundamental views to enhance your entries.

Psychological levels matter more than fancy indicators when holding positions for weeks. Round numbers like 1.1000 on EURUSD or 110.00 on USDJPY act like magnets.

I track about 5-6 key levels per pair and ignore everything else. Had a GBP position last month that sat at a weekly resistance for 3 weeks before finally breaking through.

What helped my swing trades was marking where institutions likely have their stops. Banks don’t care about your 15-minute chart patterns but respect those monthly highs and lows.

Fundamentals get you the direction, but TA helps avoid getting stopped out by random volatility.

TA works differently for swing trades but it’s still useful. Major support and resistance zones definitely matter more when you’re holding for weeks.

I use weekly charts to find key levels and monthly charts to see the bigger picture. The noise from shorter timeframes becomes less important.

Combining your fundamental analysis with these longer term technical levels usually gives better entry points than using fundamentals alone.
