Been searching for a good gold vs inflation chart. Most I come across seem outdated or unreliable.
I’m interested in the correlation over the last decade. What sources do you all use for accurate data?

Yahoo Finance has decent charts if you overlay gold with CPI. Just remember gold acts weird sometimes.
FRED works but gold rarely follows inflation anyway.
Investing.com’s got a solid charting tool for plotting XAUUSD against US CPI data - goes back years and updates automatically with a clean interface.
But here’s the thing from actually trading gold through different inflation cycles: the correlation falls apart exactly when you need it. 2018 was a perfect example - inflation picked up but gold went nowhere because rates were climbing.
The real edge? Gold moves before the inflation data hits. By the time CPI confirms what’s happening, gold already priced it in weeks ago.
Want a better hedge? Track the 5-year breakeven inflation rate instead. That forward-looking measure beats backward-looking CPI for predicting gold moves.
Marketwatch allows you to access historical gold prices alongside inflation data quite easily. Their charting tool simplifies the process of overlaying both.
Based on my observations, gold is more influenced by dollar strength rather than just inflation figures. When the dollar weakens, gold tends to rally irrespective of CPI readings.
You may notice a stronger correlation during crisis periods, but it tends to weaken in stable market conditions.
Check the FRED database from St. Louis Fed for reliable long-term gold and CPI data. You can chart this data over various timeframes. However, do not expect a straightforward gold-inflation relationship. Gold tends to react more to changes in the dollar and central bank policies rather than inflation alone. For the years 2010-2020, you can see this clearly. If you are using gold as a hedge, pay more attention to real interest rates instead of just inflation.
Bloomberg Terminal has the cleanest data but it’s expensive. For free stuff, check the World Gold Council website and grab BLS inflation data. Honestly though, tracking gold vs inflation won’t help much with trading. Gold moves on dollar weakness, geopolitical scares, and rate expectations. I’ve watched gold tank 5% on hot inflation numbers because everyone expected the Fed to get aggressive. Want to trade gold? Watch DXY and 10-year real yields instead.
TradingView’s my go-to for gold vs inflation charts. Use their XAUUSD chart and overlay CPI data directly on it.
Here’s the thing though - gold doesn’t track inflation like everyone says. I’ve watched it moon during deflationary periods when markets got spooked. That 2020 run? Dollar weakness and Fed moves, not inflation.
Inflation.org works if you want free historical data. But here’s what matters: gold moves on inflation expectations, not the actual CPI numbers. Once those reports hit, you’re already too late.
