Been trading for two years and still can’t decide if what I’m doing is actual trading or just fancy gambling.
Sometimes I feel like I have a solid strategy, other times it feels like I’m just throwing money at charts and hoping for the best.
Your emotions reveal a lot. Bumping up position sizes after losses shows you’re chasing losses, which is gambling. Bailing on winners early out of fear means you have a gambling mindset. Real traders adhere to their plans regardless of emotions. Know your risk per trade before entering. Your win rate and average profit should remain consistent each month. Review your last 50 trades for patterns. If you can’t explain what you see, it indicates you might be gambling rather than trading.

Gamblers blame everything but themselves when they lose. Traders own their losses and figure out what went wrong.
I thought having any edge made me a trader. Wrong. Your edge has to actually show up in your P&L after hundreds of trades. If your account’s bouncing around like a pinball after six months, you’re gambling.
Biggest giveaway? How you handle slow days. Gamblers can’t sit still and force stupid trades. Traders wait for their setup even if it means doing jack shit for a week.
Look at your journal from six months back. See real improvement in how you make decisions? No? You’re still gambling.
It comes down to having a strategy.
Gambling is throwing money at random bets with no real analysis. Trading means you track what works, manage your risk, and stick to your rules even when emotions kick in.
Can you explain why you entered and where you’ll exit? That’s trading. Just hoping the price moves your way? That’s gambling.
Using stop losses and position sizing? That’s trading. Without them, you’re just gambling with extra steps.
