Comparing support quality on IG's MT4 versus MT5—does it actually matter which platform you use?

I’ve been trying to decide whether to stick with MT4 or switch to MT5 on IG, and I realized I don’t actually know if their support differs between the two platforms. Like, does one platform have more documented issues? Does support respond differently depending on which version you’re using?

I figure this probably matters because MT5 is newer so maybe they support it better, or maybe MT4 is so standard that any issue gets faster solutions. But I’m also wondering if platform stability is the real differentiator here, not support responsiveness.

What I’m trying to figure out: if I’m choosing between MT4 and MT5 on IG, should I be looking at their support quality for each platform, or is that not really a meaningful way to compare? Does one platform have way more problems that require support help? And if I’m factoring in GlobeGain rebates anyway, does the platform choice actually affect what I’m paying in total costs?

Has anyone switched between the two and noticed a difference in how quickly IG support helps with platform issues?

Support quality is the same for both platforms. IG treats them equally. The real difference is platform stability and feature set.

MT4 is older and more stable. It has slower performance but fewer crashes. MT5 is newer with better charting and built-in hedging, but it crashes more often, especially under heavy load during volatile markets.

So your question actually reverses: if MT5 crashes more, you’ll need more support help. But IG’s support won’t fix the crashes faster—they’ll just say it’s normal.

Both platforms have the same rebate integration with GlobeGain. Rebates don’t differ between MT4 and MT5 on IG.

Choose based on what features you actually use, not on support. If you scalp, use MT4—stability matters more. If you use advanced indicators and hedging, MT5 works, but accept you’ll need to restart it occasionally.

I use MT5 on IG because I like the features, but I’ve definitely had more technical issues than when I was on MT4. Platform freezes, slow chart refreshes during news, that kind of stuff.

When I contact IG about these, they basically say “that’s just how MT5 is.” Not really helpful. Switched most of my scalping back to MT4 just because it’s more stable.

So if you’re choosing between them for stability reasons, pick MT4. For features, MT5 is better but you’ll probably need more patience when things lag. Support can’t really fix either one.

I’ve been on MT4 with IG for years and honestly never had a major issue. MT5 seems like it’s still working out some kinks based on what I read on forums.

Maybe the fact that MT4 is mature means there are fewer surprises, fewer times you need support. I’d just stick with what works unless you really need something MT5 does that MT4 doesn’t have.

Your rebates are the same either way, so the platform choice isn’t affecting your costs at all.

MT4 more stable MT5 has more features. Support same for both.

I use MT5 and haven’t had support issues. Maybe MT4 is just old and works fine. Platform choice probably doesn’t matter much.

One more detail: if you’re grid trading or scalping with lots of open positions, MT4 handles the order book better. MT5 sometimes has display lag with too many orders open. That’s not a support issue—it’s a platform design issue. Know this before you choose, so you don’t blame support for something the platform can’t do.

I did the math a while back comparing my trades on both platforms. The rebate amounts were identical—GlobeGain rebates are calculated on the trade itself, not the platform. So platform choice doesn’t change your real costs at all.

Choose based on what you’re trading, not money reasons. MT4 if you want stability and simple execution. MT5 if you want advanced charting and features and don’t mind occasional freezes.

Rebates same on both platforms. Pick platforms based on features.

One thing I noticed: MT4 is so established that when I do have questions, there are tons of guides and forum posts about fixing issues. MT5 is newer so sometimes your problem doesn’t have a documented answer.

That actually matters more than whether IG support responds fast. Can you solve the problem yourself quickly or do you get stuck? That’s the real difference.

I think MT4 just works. MT5 has nicer graphics. Either way support isn’t the reason to choose. Go with whatever you like using.
