bear trap trading has caught me off guard this week

Thought I was reading the market right but got burned twice on what looked like clear downtrends.

Price would drop, I’d go short, then boom - reversal and I’m underwater. Starting to second guess my entry timing completely.

Been there more times than I want to admit. Those fake breakdowns are brutal.

What helped me was adding a 15-minute wait rule after any major support break. Sounds simple but it filters out most of the head fakes. Real breakdowns usually keep going, traps reverse quickly.

Also started watching how price reacts when it hits the next support level down. If it bounces hard instead of grinding through, that’s your signal to get out fast.

The key thing I learned - institutional players love to hunt stops below obvious support. They push price down just enough to trigger retail shorts, then buy up the liquidity. Once you see this pattern a few times, it gets easier to spot.

Support levels that everyone can see are usually fake breakouts. Try using less obvious levels instead.

The worst part about bear traps is they make you question your whole setup when you might actually be reading the market correctly.

I started using smaller position sizes when I see what looks like a clear breakdown until I get that secondary confirmation. This way even if I get trapped, the damage is limited.

Another thing that helps is checking the daily timeframe before taking any short position. Sometimes what looks like a breakdown on the 1H chart is just a small pullback in a bigger uptrend.

Wait for volume to confirm direction.

Bear traps occur when you react to a price drop without waiting for confirmation. A drop in price does not guarantee it will continue downward.

Always observe the volume during the initial drop. If the volume is weak, it could indicate a false breakdown. Look for price action around key support levels after a drop as well.

Before entering short positions, wait for at least two consecutive lower highs. The first drop might just be profit taking or manipulation by larger traders.

When trading with trend continuation, set tighter stop-losses. It is wiser to take a small loss than to be caught in a major reversal.
