Starting with Interactive Brokers - Need Guidance

Hello everyone,

I’ve been investing for about 3 years using Trading 212 for individual stocks and my local bank for MSCI index funds. Now I want to switch to a single global ETF strategy for the long term (10-25 years). I chose Interactive Brokers because they seem reliable, allow easy portfolio transfers, and handle international moves well.

The platform interface is confusing at first glance. I just need basic functionality to purchase one ETF monthly with a fixed amount. Here’s what I need help with:

Pricing Questions:

  • Currently using tiered pricing and saw 1.25 euro fee for VWCE purchase. The estimate showed 1.25-2.55 euro range. Will this stay consistent for 500 euro monthly investments?
  • Are there hidden costs like maintenance fees, inactivity charges, or selling fees I should know about?

Trading Concerns:

  • Got a “market data unavailable” warning when placing market orders. Should I use limit orders instead?
  • Recently deposited funds aren’t available for withdrawal yet. What other restrictions like this exist?

Currency Issues:

  • Planning to invest in euros mainly, but what about USD purchases? Heard there are base currency change limitations that might require direct USD deposits.

Automation Setup:

  • Any special fees or restrictions for automatic monthly investments?
  • Should I use Global Trader app or main platform for monitoring and setup?

Appreciate any insights from experienced users!

You’ll pay the 1.25 euro fee on your 500 euro monthly buys. IBKR charges 0.25% with a 1.25 euro minimum on European ETFs, so you’ll always hit that minimum. Stick with limit orders to avoid data subscription fees and get better prices. This way, you won’t deal with ‘market data unavailable’ warnings. For monthly investing, use fractional shares through the mobile app. It’s simple and has no extra fees. Keep everything in euros. IBKR’s conversion rates are solid, so don’t overthink it.

Been using IBKR for 5 years. Those pricing estimates fluctuate with market conditions, but VWCE monthly buys should stay around 1.25 euros.

Watch the 10 euro monthly activity fee if your commissions are too low. With 500 euro monthly investments, you’ll easily hit the minimum.

Fund settlement is normal - takes a few days before you can withdraw fresh deposits. Selling positions has a T+2 settlement period.

Just deposit euros and let IBKR handle conversions. Their FX rates beat most banks. Don’t change your base currency later - it’s a hassle. Stick with euros if that’s your main currency.

Skip Global Trader for setup. Use the web platform for initial automation, then monitor on the app. The app’s missing key settings.

Monthly automation works fine, but double-check your account settings first. The platform sometimes glitches with recurring orders.

The interface clicks after a few trades. Set up fractional investing through their mobile app - it handles monthly automation without issues.

That 1.25 euro fee for VWCE is standard and won’t change based on how much you invest. The price range accounts for market swings.

Stick with limit orders over market orders. You’ll control your entry price and skip those annoying data subscription pop-ups.
