Is the Japanese Yen (JPY) still considered the ultimate safe-haven asset in times of crisis?

I’ve been reading about safe-haven currencies and keep seeing the Japanese Yen mentioned as the go-to currency during market turmoil. But with everything that’s happened in recent years - global economic shifts, changes in monetary policy, and other factors - I’m wondering if this is still true.

Does the JPY still hold its reputation as the ultimate safe-haven asset when markets get volatile? Or have things changed? I’ve noticed sometimes other currencies like the USD or CHF seem to perform better during crisis periods.

What’s your experience with trading the Yen during uncertain times? Has its safe-haven status weakened, or is it still reliable when everything else is falling apart?

JPY works during panic selling, but timing beats everything. I’ve watched tons of traders get crushed waiting for yen strength that just doesn’t show up. The game changed when BOJ froze rates while everyone else hiked. Now JPY rallies aren’t about money leaving risk assets - it’s about how fast it leaves. Watch for correlation breakdowns. When USD/JPY breaks from stocks and bonds, that’s your cue. Don’t chase anything after 72 hours. Smart money’s already moved on by then.

JPY still works but not like before. USD usually stronger now during big selloffs.

The yen’s still a safe haven but not like it used to be. I’ve traded through several major crashes and saw the pattern shift around 2016-2017.

March 2020 crash? JPY strengthened at first, then USD took over fast. Same with the banking stress last year.

It’s all about interest rates now. Japan stayed at zero while everyone else hiked hard. Killed the yen’s appeal since carry trades got way more attractive elsewhere.

I still trade JPY pairs when volatility spikes, but I watch those first 24-48 hours like a hawk. No early strength in a crisis? I’m switching to USD or CHF depending on what’s causing the selloff.

The safe haven game depends on crisis type now. Financial system problems? Yen still wins. Inflation or geopolitical mess? Flows go straight to the dollar.

CHF beats JPY most of the time lately.

The yen’s still a safe haven, but its effectiveness can vary based on the type of crisis. In a market downturn, the yen usually strengthens. However, during geopolitical issues or inflation, the dollar often outperforms. Additionally, the Bank of Japan’s prolonged low rates make the yen less appealing compared to currencies offering higher yields.
