I’ve been studying Forex for about a month now and I’m getting conflicted advice from different sources. Some people say I should pick just one currency pair like EUR/USD and really get to know how it moves, understand its patterns, and become an expert on that single pair before moving on to others.
But then I see other traders saying I should diversify from the start and learn multiple pairs so I don’t miss opportunities and get a better feel for the overall market.
Right now I’m watching like 6 different pairs and honestly it’s pretty overwhelming. I feel like I’m not really learning any of them well because I’m jumping around so much. But I’m also worried that if I only focus on EUR/USD, I might be limiting myself too much.
For those of you who remember being beginners, what approach worked better for you? Did you master one pair first, or did you spread your attention across multiple instruments from the beginning?
I’m using a demo account right now and have about 3-4 hours a day to dedicate to learning, if that makes a difference in your advice.
One pair until you can actually make money from it.
Stick to EUR/USD only. Don’t make the rookie mistake of watching multiple pairs at once - you’ll just confuse yourself. EUR/USD moves enough to teach you everything you need, and it’s active during both London and NY sessions so you’ll see how it reacts to news and market changes. Spend your 3-4 hours studying just this one pair until you really get it. Once you’ve got EUR/USD down, picking up other pairs is easier. Better to know one pair inside and out than to understand several poorly.
You’re totally right, multiple pairs get overwhelming fast. Been there myself when I started. EUR/USD is perfect to focus on. It moves well and you’ll learn the fundamentals without getting scattered. Watch how it behaves in different sessions and really get to know it. Once you’ve got EUR/USD down, adding other pairs won’t feel so intimidating.
Start with EUR/USD only. Six pairs will just confuse you and slow down your progress.
Six pairs is way too much starting out. I made this mistake too.
First few months I jumped between EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, and others. Thought I was being smart watching everything. Really I didn’t understand any of them.
Picked EUR/USD and stuck with it for 4 months. Started seeing things I’d missed - how it reacts to news, when it gets choppy, which support levels actually work.
Once I could predict EUR/USD decently, adding GBP/USD was easy. Skills carried over.
With 3-4 hours daily, you can really learn one pair. Study its patterns, weekly trends, how it moves during London and New York sessions. Way better than knowing six pairs poorly.
You won’t miss opportunities focusing on one. EUR/USD moves plenty with good volume all day. Perfect for learning.
