I’m still pretty new to forex trading and I’ve been sticking mostly to EUR/USD and GBP/USD since I have at least some basic understanding of the US and European economies from following the news.
But I keep seeing other pairs that seem to have interesting price movements - like some of the exotic pairs or even majors like USD/JPY or AUD/CAD. The thing is, I honestly don’t know much about Japan’s economy or what drives the Australian dollar.
Should I be researching and learning about these economies before I even think about trading their currencies? Or is technical analysis enough to make trading decisions regardless of which countries are involved?
I’m worried I might be missing out on good opportunities, but I also don’t want to jump into something blind. How important is it to understand the fundamentals of both economies in a currency pair before trading it?
You can trade pairs you don’t fully understand if your technical setup is solid and you’re managing risk well.
I’ve made good money on USD/JPY just using chart patterns and momentum signals. The key is knowing when big news drops for each currency - either stay out or size down your positions.
You can learn the basic drivers quickly without being an economics expert. Just figure out what moves each currency in different market situations.
You don’t need to be an economics expert to trade different pairs. I’ve pulled decent profits from USD/JPY and AUD/USD without studying Japanese monetary policy or Australian mining exports in depth.
Technical analysis works everywhere - support, resistance, trends, and price patterns show up no matter what’s happening with the economies underneath. Just pick liquid pairs where your setups actually mean something.
But learn the basics. AUD follows commodities and risk appetite. JPY strengthens when markets get scared. Takes 30 minutes of reading to figure out these main drivers.
Test one new major pair at a time with small positions. USD/JPY behaves pretty predictably and has reasonable spreads. Avoid the exotic pairs until you’ve got more experience - spreads will kill you and liquidity gets weird.
Stick with your technical edge but know which major news events matter for each currency. You don’t need to understand every detail of their economies.
Price action works on any pair honestly.
Stick with EUR/USD and GBP/USD until you’re making money consistently. Don’t add new pairs while you’re still learning - it’ll just mess up your focus. Each pair behaves differently. USD/JPY doesn’t move like EUR/USD during the same sessions. You’ve got to learn these quirks through real trading experience. Sure, knowing some economics helps, but staying consistent matters way more. Get good at what you’re trading now, then add one pair at a time once your account’s actually growing.
Learn the basics about each currency pair before you trade. Start with USD/JPY - it’s straightforward for beginners.
