Been copy trading for a few months now and currently following 8 different traders across various markets.
Starting to wonder if I’m overdoing it or if I should add more. Some perform well during certain market conditions while others seem to balance things out during volatility.
What’s worked best for you in terms of portfolio balance?
Three to five max otherwise tracking becomes messy.
Three to four is a better number. It keeps things manageable and helps focus on the stronger traders.
Two, three tops. Any more and you’re just watering down your returns with weak performers. Each extra trader makes it harder to actually watch what they’re doing. I see people copying 10+ thinking they’re being smart about risk - they’re not. You can’t react fast enough when someone starts tanking. Find two solid traders with different styles and stick with them. Watch out for correlation though - lots of these guys trade the same setups, so you think you’re diversified but you’re really not.
Started with 12 traders when I jumped into copy trading. Complete disaster. Couldn’t track who was doing what and missed huge red flags.
Now I stick to 6 max. That’s the sweet spot - enough variety without losing your mind. I split them up: two scalpers, two swing traders, two long-term.
Here’s what nobody talks about - allocation size matters more than trader count. Six traders with smart position sizing beats three getting equal chunks. My top performers get 25% each, newbies get smaller amounts while I test them.
Also check correlation across different market conditions. Had three traders who looked totally different but all got wrecked the same way in March. Now I backtest how they handled major events before adding anyone.
Eight traders is probably too many. I stick with around five good ones. This gives you decent diversification but allows you to keep track of what’s happening.
You need to catch underperformers fast so you can cut them loose. More traders means you are spread too thin watching everyone.
Quality over quantity every time.
Seven can work. Just make sure you keep an eye on performance and adjust as needed.
