How do you handle the stress of knowing other people's money is on the line with every trade you make?

Been managing client accounts for a few months now and the pressure is getting to me.

Every position I open feels like someone’s rent money or savings. How do you guys deal with this mentally when trading for others?

Just trade your own cash reduces stress.

That weight never goes away, but you learn to work with it.

First few years managing accounts, I’d lose sleep over every red position. Had to realize good risk management beats worrying every time.

I set strict stop losses and position sizes based on what they can actually lose. Someone hands you their rent money? That’s an expectations talk, not a trading issue.

I document every decision and the reasoning. When clients see the logic, they trust the process more. Makes everything feel less crazy.

Also learned to separate my emotions from their cash. Sounds harsh, but treating it like any other capital helps me make smarter calls. Stressing about “what if” screws up trades way more than focusing on “what’s next.”

Had a client lose his mind over an 80-pip EUR/USD loss. Dude was checking his account every 5 minutes and calling me screaming.

Now I make clients agree not to check positions more than once a day. Sounds crazy, but it works. Most stress comes from them micromanaging and pressuring you into stupid moves.

I also refuse money from desperate people. Someone mentions bills or debts when they’re handing over cash? I’m out. You need money you can actually lose.

The mental side clicked when I stopped trying to predict every move. My job is running a system that works, not being a fortune teller. You’ll have losing trades even when you do everything right.

Focus on your strategy and stay disciplined. Remind clients that trading always has risks. Consistency helps manage stress.

Keep position sizes small enough that losses won’t wreck anyone’s life. I’ve seen too many new traders blow up accounts by going too big on single trades. Your job isn’t swinging for the fences with someone else’s money - it’s protecting capital while grinding out steady returns. Never risk more than 1-2% per trade. Small positions turn losing streaks into annoying expenses instead of catastrophes. Everyone sleeps better that way. And make sure you get expectations and drawdown limits in writing before you touch their money.

The stress hits because you feel responsible for stuff that’s mostly out of your hands.

I quit managing other people’s money. The emotional weight wasn’t worth it. Markets are going to do what they do. It doesn’t matter whose cash is on the line.

If you’re staying in the game, ensure clients understand the risks upfront and have solid agreements. Clear boundaries help, but that pressure never really goes away.
