I’ve been trading for a few months now and I’m trying to figure out the best approach when it comes to choosing what to trade. Right now I’m kind of all over the place - sometimes I look at EUR/USD, other times I jump to GBP/JPY if I see what looks like a good setup, and I’ve even tried some indices and commodities. I’m curious about how more experienced traders handle this. Do you guys stick to just one or two currency pairs and really get to know them inside and out? Or do you scan multiple markets and trade whatever is showing the best opportunities at the time? I feel like there are pros and cons to both approaches. Specializing seems like it would help me understand the specific behavior and patterns of certain pairs better. But on the other hand, limiting myself might mean missing out on good trades in other markets. What’s worked best for you? And if you do specialize, how did you choose which assets to focus on? Any advice would be really helpful.
Started exactly like you - jumping between anything that looked good. Wasted 6 months doing that.
Game changer was tracking what actually worked. Simple spreadsheet showed I was bleeding money on everything except EUR/USD and GBP/USD.
Those two give me plenty of action during London and NY sessions. I know how they move on NFP, ECB meetings, Brexit news. That beats chasing random setups on exotic pairs every time.
Stick to 2-3 pairs max. Trade them for 3 months minimum before adding more. You’ll catch patterns other traders miss because they’re all over the place.
Focus on a couple pairs and learn them well.
I mainly focus on major pairs but I will take a trade on anything that looks good.
I trade three main pairs that don’t correlate much. EUR/USD for clean trends, GBP/JPY when I want volatility, and USD/CHF for safe haven moves.
This gives me good variety without overcomplicating things. I’ve learned how each one acts during different sessions and when news hits.
Trying to watch everything just paralyzes you and kills your results.
